A Message from Charlie Frew, Executive Director
Jerusalem House believes Housing is Healthcare for homeless and low-income individuals and families affected by with HIV/AIDS and leads the Atlanta community in meeting the needs of this population. In 1988, Jerusalem House was established by a coalition of community leaders who conceptualized a residential facility for homeless people with AIDS that would foster independence and dignity. The agency is so-named because “Jerusalem” means “dwelling of peace.” Through four residential programs: Program for Adults (1989), The Family Program (1997), and the Scattered Site I and II Programs (2003 & 2009), Jerusalem House provides 68% of the permanent/supportive housing designated for our target population.
The Housing Programs of Jerusalem House do more for individuals and families than simply provide homes. In addition to homelessness, poverty and HIV/AIDS, many residents struggle with substance abuse, or have experienced domestic violence and mental health issues. Our staff individually tailors programs with each resident so he/she will have the opportunity to chart a path to recovery at the pace that fits his/her situation. All residents have access to vital supportive services provided by our staff members and collaboratively through 27 formal partnerships with other Atlanta agencies. Examples of services include case management and counseling, education, budgeting classes, HIV/AIDS specific services, and food/clothing assistance.
In the spring of 2010, Jerusalem House’s leadership began to prepare for the creation of its next five- year strategic plan, which would take effect in fiscal year 2012. The group envisioned an inclusive process in which board members, staff members and community supporters would be involved in shaping the organization’s work in the years to come. A strategic planning committee, comprised of board, management and staff members was appointed and convened for the first time in July 2010. During this meeting, results of a staff brainstorming session were reviewed and gave context to the overall planning effort.
This plan reflects our aspiration to support as many people as possible in their move to self-sufficiency, beginning with stable housing. This plan is a living document, and we intend to work from it, learn from it, live with it, adapt it as needed, and share it widely with our community in order to gather the support we will need to realize this bold vision.
With our community’s support, as we have learned in implementing our previous strategic plans, we can accomplish more than we ever dreamed. We move into the future with the confidence that our dedicated board of directors, in partnership with our extremely capable management, staff and external stakeholders, have crafted the plans that those we serve need – and deserve.
